Copyleaks Analysis Reveals Explosive Growth of AI Content Across the Web

Study highlights the need for advanced content verification tools for digital integrity

New York, NY – April 30, 2024 Copyleaks, a pioneering force in AI-based text analysis and plagiarism detection, today announced a compelling new analysis highlighting the explosive growth of AI-generated content on the web. The study, conducted from 2013 to March 2024, reveals a sharp increase in the growth of AI content on the web, surging 8,362% from November 2022, when ChatGPT 3.5 was released, to March 2024.

Initially and not surprisingly, in 2013, no web pages featured AI-generated content. However, since the release of ChatGPT 3.5 in November 2022, there’s been on average a 110% increase in the growth of AI web pages over each time frame analyzed and, by March 2024, AI-generated content was found on 1.57% of all web pages analyzed.

The remarkable rise in AI-generated content can be attributed to the widespread availability of publicly accessible AI tools, such as ChatGPT, empowering individuals and organizations to leverage advanced automation for content creation. This shift underscores the transformative impact of AI technologies on the digital landscape, with implications for content authenticity and online information dissemination.

“Of course, it was expected to see AI utilized within online digital content, but as the data shows, the saturation of it is possibly more rapid than we might have initially imagined,” said Alon Yamin, CEO and Co-founder of Copyleaks. “Generative AI poses excellent opportunities within digital content, but it still presents many challenges, especially around accuracy and transparency.”

Other key highlights from the study include:

  • Trickle to a surge: Although ChatGPT3 was released in June 2020, there was only a very modest increase in the number of web pages containing AI content from June 2020-October 2022.  From November 2022-Jan 2023 the proliferation of AI content exploded, increasing 187%

  • Explosive Growth: From Q1 2023 to Q1 2024, there was a massive 2,848% increase in the number of web pages containing AI content.

  • Periodic Growth: The largest increase in AI-generated content from one time frame to another was from January 2023 to March 2023, when there was a 259% increase in the number of web pages containing AI content.

“If this past year is any indication, AI technology will continue to evolve exponentially. That’s why having the necessary tools to provide transparency around AI’s presence is crucial,” added Yamin. “With the upcoming elections and after witnessing such unprecedented saturation, solutions that provide visibility around AI use along with sensible AI regulations are a continued need for the public to have a sense of trust and safety in this age of AI.”

The comprehensive analysis conducted by Copyleaks sheds light on the profound impact of AI on online content ecosystems. The findings serve as a call to action for stakeholders to proactively address emerging challenges and harness the potential of AI responsibly.

About the Analysis

The study conducted by Copyleaks from 2013 to 2024 employed data sourced from the common crawl dataset, analyzing a sample of 1 million web pages during each specified time period. This rigorous approach allowed for a comprehensive assessment of the growth of AI-generated content on the web.
